Town of St. George's

St. George is the oldest continuously occupied English settlement in the New World. On May 9th, 1612 The Plough was dispatched to Bermuda by the Virginia Company with Master Richard Moore and approximately sixty settlers to establish an English settlement on Bermuda. The Plough anchored in St. George’s Harbour in Saturday, July 1612. After spending a short time on Smith’s Island, Governor Moore built small cabins of palmetto leaves in the area where the town of St. George now stands establishing Bermuda’s first town on the northern shore of St. George’s Harbour.

Town of St. George’s was the principal port of entry in the early days of the island’s development and was the island’s capital for more than 200 years. The Town was incorporated in 1797 and is administered by a Mayor, three Aldermen, and five Common Councilors.

In December 2000 the “Historic Town of St. George’s and Related Fortifications” were designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Cultural & Scientific Organization (UNESCO).

Starting in 2003 The Corporation of St. George’s is embarking on a plan to make the Town of St. George’s more accessible to persons with disabilities. Information is being gathered and an action plan will be implemented which will not only enable the Corporation of St. Georges to improve accessibility to the streets, buildings and parks under its control but will also encourage businesses and tourist attractions in the old town to do the same.
